Rounding Off A Good Year

Since the launch of the High Current News e-newsletter in September, 2010, we at D/F hope that we have succeeded to inform our readers about the company and the latest "MIG" & "TIG" news, products and updates. Here is a short summary of these items.

New Products
In this year's issues we introduced our new Open-Arc Water-Cooled Gasless Overlay Machine Torch,  our Water-Cooled Tandem Torch,  our Water-Cooled-to-the-Tip torches, and our Water-Cooled Straight or Curved torches. With these torches and the rest of our complete line of equipment, you are sure to find the right MIG or TIG solution for your welding application.

New Web Site
In 2010 we launched our new web site with the intent to make the customer aware of our products and applications so we can help find the best solution for any particular "MIG" or "TIG" welding job.

D/F Welding Tips & Tricks
Since the first issue we have discussed Prolonging Contact Tip Life, Aluminum MIG Welding and Effective MIG Welding, as well as Preventing Weld Metal Porosity in this issue. Look out for more of these helpful articles in the future.

We are excited to continue the High Current News e-newsletter into the 2010 year. If you have any questions or comments about the newsletter thus far, or would like to make suggestions to help improve future releases, please feel free to email us.

Water-Cooled-to-the-Tip Torches

D/F Water-Cooled-to-the-Tip Torches

The fully Water-Cooled-to-the-Tip MIG Standard and Series-A Machine Torches are applied to either a remote mount Docking Spool for robotic applications or a direct mount Docking Spool configuration for automatic machine applications. These torches are ideal for welding at currents up to 850 amps and large diameter wires. Very similar in design to the Linde® ST-12 but with improvements and new features, and proven to be a superior replacement alternative for the Lincoln Electric® K148A & K148B, the D/F Machine Water-Cooled-to-the-Tip Torch assemblies are designed to provide long trouble-free service. With the various models available, a contact assembly selection may be made to suit individual torch head requirements.

  • Up to 850 Amps Continuous Duty
  • Remote or Direct Mounting Available
  • Direct Replacements to Linde® ST-12, Lincoln Electric® K148A & K148B

D/F Welding Tips & Tricks - Preventing Weld Metal Porosity

Porosity in the weld metal can lead to overall strength reduction in the weld. Luckily, porosity can be prevented most of the time. There are a good number of causes of weld metal porosity, and a few of the important ones are mentioned below.

  • Diminished shielding gas can cause dilution with the atmosphere due to an empty gas cylinder, a pinched gas hose, a restricted gas nozzle,  the gas nozzle being too far from the weld pool, as well as many other reasons.
  • Contaminants such as anti-spatter compound, grease, paint, oil, glue and moisture can also cause porosity. Consumables (nozzles, tips, liners) and other welding equipment that might be near the weld pool should be checked and cleaned.
  • Air can enter the weld in various ways, and can also lead to weld porosity. If shielding gas flow speed is too high it can suck air into the mixture. A draft or air current can also push air into the weld. If the weld joint is open at the root it could suck air in from the back end. Damaged o-ring seals can also introduce air into the shielding gas.
Although certain levels of weld porosity are acceptible under some welding codes or standards, it should still be actively prevented to ensure a high quality weld.
